If I had a pound for every person who told me they tried learning to play piano but gave up...well let's just say I could teach for free for a while! The problem, it seems to me, is that the enthusiasm is often worn away by a very dry approach to teaching music that is less about developing a real connection with the instrument and more about scales and mechanics.
These things are important of course, but you can make music before you understand the theory and technique that makes it possible. By focusing on the immediate gratification of actually creating music you spark a passion and an enthusiasm that will naturally propel a student towards a complete understanding of the instrument.
I have no issue with the grading system because it does work for some people; but students who come to me generally want to free themselves from the page and use their ears. Improvisation is a core part of my teaching, satisfying that most commonly expressed desire, 'I just want to be able to sit down and play'. Whether you are a beginner, an intermediate or advanced player, I can help you develop your piano playing and take you to the next level.
